On 13 April, Charl Oberholzer, National Under Chairperson of AfriForum Youth and President of the SRC at the University of Pretoria (UP), was announced as the new national chairperson of AfriForum Youth.

This followed after the former chairperson, Ernst Roets, was appointed as Acting Deputy chairperson of the AfriForum organisation.

Oberholzer has been active in AfriForum Youth's leadership for years. Roets said that he relinquished his duties to Oberholzer with an easy heart, because he has full confidence in Oberholzer's leadership abilities. 'In his role as president of UP's SRC, he (Oberholzer) has already proved himself as someone who is willing to act fearlessly when it comes to the protection of students' rights.'

Roets added that his own years of working as chairperson of AfriForum Youth were the best of his life. He said that the experience and the knowledge that he gained, as well as the friends he made, he would not exchange for anything.

With his new position at AfriForum, Roets will still be involved in AfriForum Youth as advisor and supporter.

Oberholzer, on his part, said that he will continue with hius battle to free young people from affrimative action as well as his campaigns to keep mother-tongue education available.

'To be the chairperson of the fastest growing youth movement is a great honour and an opportunity to make the already marginalised youth's voices count.'
